Big Brother 2010 – Newcomers Cause Outright Weirdness

When irritating trouble-stirrer Caiomhe left, there was much rejoicing.

In her wake she left the house a strangely tranquil place, free of dispute and rage, bubbling with romance and newly formed alliances. Those who were never going to get on at all observed a diplomatic silence, whilst friendships blossomed in the most unlikely of places. When Ben and Rachel looked odds on to share a kiss any day, it was clear that things were too good to be true. This fragile utopia Endemol had formed within the fibreglass walls of a hospitable television studio had to shatter before the viewership puked in collective nausea at the relentless joy onscreen.

On Friday night the producers introduced a light hammer-blow to the contentment, and already cracks are starting to show. Introducing three new housemates, selected by the current contestants, the key to the decision was that we heard the newbie’s favourite and least favourite housemate currently squatting in the bungalow. Immediately upon entrance then, there would be mistrust, exposed acrimony and loathing.

Hooray!

The arrival of the apparently awful JJ has skewed the strange dynamic between platonic potential lovers, John James and Josie. All those ‘J’s flying around confuse things enough, but add to this the fact John James is pushing for some sort of bromance with the boxer whilst exactly imitating his clothing choices, and things look disturbingly unhealthy. All the while,  Josie is constantly making jokes about group sex with the two of them – and it’s becoming more than a little revolting and incestuous. This whole, unwholesome scene can only end in a sexually aggressive argument, or some horrific, vigorous session of endocytosis. Either will be unwatchable.

Whilst all this mutual, confused back-scratching goes on, things are beginning to fall apart for Ben who has taken to new housemate Laura at the expense of Rachel’s affections. Dropping Rachel like a hot plop was perhaps Ben’s biggest mistake so far, as the woman scorned is now a focused bolus of unfettered rage. And quite rightly so. Hers and Ben’s romance could have been the most touching and unlikely pairing in Big Brother history, and for Ben to cheat us of it for the sake of an airhead like Laura is frankly disgraceful.

Also, Rachel is far more attractive, even if she’s alarmingly dim.

With nominations announced for this week, it’s an all boy contest as Dave, John James, Ben and Steve will face the public vote. Except there’s that silly new mechanism whereby one of those can win a task and replace themselves with another housemate. Impossible to predict who might go, as that replacement choice will throw the whole balance.

My recommendation is that they throw Caoimhe back in for a couple of days, so we can see her get evicted properly. I think we all need closure on that one, and the limp walkout and subsequent interview simply didn’t supply us with the cruel ending we desired. Let us all chant ‘GET CAIOMHE BACK IN, THEN GET CAIOMHE BACK OUT (again)…(quickly)’.

While watching Channel 4’s eye-opening three-part documentary, it strikes you just how fortunate the makers were in timing their filming.
